Birders Survey Beaches for Effects of Oil - Jackson County, Mississippi

" 'Birds are great indicators of a broader system. The Gulf Coast has 55 Important Bird Areas, or IBAs, which range in importance from globally to locally, said Dr. Tom Bancroft, Chief Science Officer for the National Audubon Society.' " 

Teams were outfitted with binoculars for spotting birds, a digital camera and a GPS device for reporting the coordinates of oiled birds to authorities.
